Swamp Dragon

Hello and Welcome Back,

I got this Dagon Minus One model as a freebee from Fenris Games. It is a bit different to my other models. It will serve as a Swamp or Water Dragon in my fantasy world.

Painting this critter was fun. It was primed black and dry brushed grey. The model got a couple of green ink glazes. A heavy dry brushing of Mithril silver was applied followed by a thin brown wash. Another layer of green glaze was then applied. A very light dry brush of Mithril silver was then applied.

After that it was some details, odd bits of other greens added to the lower parts. The eyes started as white and got two red ink glazes. The cornea detail was added in orange and the pupil added in black.

In all it was a fun model to paint. Thank You Fenris Games.

Whatthehellasaurus Rex

Hello and Welcome Back,

Time to meet a new horror...

Around the campfires, it is whispered that a fearsome monster lurks out in the Caustic Clump. A giant, armored, multi-legged monstrosity known as the Whatthehellasaurus Rex, or as some call it, "Hideitscoming."

The tales say that the creature's roar freezes the blood in your veins, and its extra legs allow it to easily run down its prey (usually you). Bullets just bounce off its hide. The monster's claws can tear through armor effortlessly. It is said to swallow its victims whole, but the lucky ones merely get bitten in half. No, I don't know how that one works either, surely the lucky ones don't encounter the Hideitscoming at all.

"Its behind me, isnt it?"

Is it a mutant or a beast natural to the world that survived the ages since the fall of the planet Corrosion?

"I'm gunna need a bigger gun!"

No one around the campfires has actually seen the beast, heard it, or has any evidence of its existence. But almost everyone knows someone who knows someone else who might have seen or heard of it, or been eaten by it. But then, as so many folks never return from the wastelands, who can say of its real for sure?

This model was inspired by a challenge over in the Billmakingstuff discord channel. In my usual fashion, I failed to finish it on time. The models was based on a toy Tyrannosaurus rex and a Allosaurus. In true mad scientist style I lopped the tail off the Tyrannosaurus and front off the Allosaurus, then I joined them together. Lots of putty filled the holes. The jaw was removed and lowered to give the Whatthehellasaurus Rex a much larger gob. I had to fix the teeth, add a tongue and extended the claws. I added blades from eva foam onto the back to make the six legged freak even more intimidating.

Angels and Minnows

Hello and Welcome Back,

Time to see more alien creatures from the Wild Galaxy.

Originally found around worlds close to black holes the Angels and Minnows are strange creatures. Very little is known about them except that the Minnow is the young version and grows into the more fearsome Angel. It is not understood how the Minnow grows into a Angel.

Generally the Angels are not aggressive to humans and there are stories of them aiding injured or stranded spacers. It is how they got the name Angels. The Angels seem to be able to tell at a distance about humans intentions towards them and will vanish or attack if they feel in danger.

These creatures have a PSI effect on any humans encountering them. The effect can either be elation or terror and the creatures seem to be able to decide which way they can influence the human they target. Humans they encounter can also be affected by dreams or nightmares for decades after. Some researchers claim that the Angel or Minnow are remotely influencing these dreams, even from across the galaxy. Some of the effected claim there are hidden messages in the dreams. Are the Angels trying to communicate with humanity?

These mysterious creatures seem to be unaffected by the void of space and travel across the galaxy in drifting space hulks. They often come as a shock to salvage teams (known as Vultures) when they run into Angels aboard a hulk. Many recall seeing the at the initial contact but wake to find them gone, after blacking out.

It is thought that the Angels are born from the chaos of a black hole, or have travelled here from another dimension somehow via the black hole or it's energies. Of course no one really knows. No Angels or Minnows have ever been captured alive and their bodies quickly fade into nothing upon death. Along with the other mysterious incidents around contact with Angels has given rise to supernatural tales about these creatures.

The figures are Angels and Minnows by Malestroms Edge. I like the sinister alien look they have.

The Space Slug

Hello and Welcome Back,

Today we take a look at a creature that has become a real pest. The Space Slug is a carnivorous alien creature found in the asteroids in the Blaagon V system. These creatures came as a nasty surprise to the asteroid miners. The Space Slugs can survive for incredibly long periods of time without sustenance and will cannibalise other Space Slugs to survive.

In time the Space Slugs managed to migrate to other systems on vessles visiting the Blaagon V system. Despite being slow moving they have become a problem for Space ships and stations across human space. Space Slugs are responsible for several ships becoming lost and drifting hulks. They are a real danger to salvage crews and explorers.

This was a Bill Making Stuff pateron challenge, to make something alien. My orignal idea had to be shelved as I didnt have the right components in the bits box. So I came to the idea of something slithery to prey upon unwary space crews. The Space Slug was an experiment in using EVA foam putty to make models. I found the EVA foam putty to be difficult to use for making the body. It took a long time to fully cure (several days) and didn't take textures well. In hindsight I think that greenstuff or milliput would have been a better choice.

The eyes are made from wooden beads. The tentacles are made from EVA foam putty rolled around a wire former. I found that this makes good flexible tentacles. It could also be used for cables and pipes on models. The teeth are made from the tips of cocktail sticks.

Thanks for looking and stay safe!

Skrapbeasts...

Hello and Welcome back,

Time for a trip to the world of Tapu, also known as the Gutterlands.

A scrap prospector stumbles upon a Skraprunt while checking out a potential pile of junk. In case you are wondering dear Reader, a Skraprunt is the young of the fearsome Skrapbeast, native to the world of Tapu aka the Gutterlands.

"Gah, eat lead ya pesky varmit*"

"MEEP! MEEP! MEEP!"

* the prospector could possibly be a descendant of Yosemite Sam. He is about the same height and has two six shooters! I think I will name this figure "Gutterlands Sam". I might have to ginger up his beard. lol.

"RRAAH!"

"MEEP!"

An enraged Skrapbeast smashes out of a pile of scrap. Mummy to the rescue.

The Skraprunt began life as a lump of spare Milliput. It was shaped and a mouth added before the putty set. The eyes are stick on decorative beads. The legs were made from wire with Greenstuff putty added. The teeth was made from Greenstuff putty.

The Skrapbeast's body was made from DAS air dry clay. The mouth and jaw was added later from DAS. The legs were made from cocktail sticks. The leg segments were sculpted over the sticks from Procreate putty. The same decorative beads also make the eyes. Greenstuff was used to make the teeth. The scrap nest was made from the contents of the bits box.

These Skrapbeasts were made to be hazards for the Skirm game by @billmakingstuff. There is a possibility in Skirm when looting scrap piles for one of these beasties to wake up and rampage around the table. Link to the FREE rules.  I decided to make the beasts from putty rather than breaking up toys like Bill. Mainly because I didnt have any suitable toys to attack and I don't want to be the weirdo mugging kids for their toys.

I decided not to base the Skrapbeasts as they can be perched on scrap piles to add an extra air of menace.

The Skrapbeast attacks Gutterlands Sam.

These Skrapbeasts would also make nice monsters for a Post Apocalyptic setting. This was a interesting project. I have learned quite a bit and used numerous new materials, methods and tools. I do have other (larger) Scrap beasts planned. There is also plans to create my own critters.

Gutterlands Sam figure is a Dwarf Engineer by Heresy Miniatures. It is a nice figure that comes with 2 pistol arms, a pick axe arm and shotgun arm should you wish to pose the figure in a variety of ways.

Thank for looking, take care out there.

Sandtreaders

Hello and Welcome back

And now for something a little different.

A Sandtreader train nearly flattens a Tengun officer.

Sandtreaders are a docile large lizard like creature native to the world of Delijellbi. They were easily domesticated and found to make excellent beasts of burden. As the Sandtreader is at home in a desert environment, Delijellbi began exporting the beasts to other arid frontier worlds such as Wolfden or Maddans world.

A Sandtreader rider.

Wild Sandtreaders spook a Corporation operative on Delijellbi. Wild Sandtreaders quite docile but will become aggressive around nesting time or with young Sandtreaders. Sandtreader herds can be hazardous when spooked and will stampede.

The Sandtreaders are resin models in Crooked Dice Miniatures' Sci Fi line. They are nice models and make great scene dressing. The Sandtreaders could also be used as a objective or tabletop hazard.

Thanks for looking and take care out there.

Skags

Hello and Welcome back,

Those of you familiar with the Borderlands Computer Game will have come across the Skags that are native to the world of Pandora.

For those of you not familiar with the Flora and Forna of Pandora, the Skag is canine like alien creature with a three way hinged jaw. They are pack Hunters and are able to eat anything, vomiting up the things they can't digest. Skags are a constant threat to anyone wandering around Pandora on foot.

These figures come from the Borderlands tabletop/ board game. They painted up really quickly using speed paints. It took The basing took longer than it did to paint them.

I am going to be using these Skags as a threat to the miners of Maddans world. They fit into the world's theme nicely.

Thanks for looking

Take care out there.

Howlers

When howls start in the wastelands it’s time to start worrying. If you are lucky it is wild dogs or wolves. If you are unlucky it will be howlers.

Howlers are a mutant that looks to be part dog, pig and possibly lion. They were first encounter in some contaminated ruins around 20PA. They have since spread across the wastelands.

Howlers hunt in packs. Like wolves they communicate with howling. These creatures are fast and powerful. They seem to be pretty immune to most of the toxins and contamination in the wastelands.

The howlers are Hell Hounds by Grendel.

The recent beastie additions manage to hit another box on my hobby bingo card.

Thanks for looking, stay safe out there.

Sand Worms!

Hello and welcome back.

The ground starts to shake. The wastelanders think that there is another earth tremor. Suddenly the ground erupts and the sand worms burst forth. Men are snatched and swallowed whole. Men screams and shout. Weapons start firing on the terrifying creatures.

The sand worms are by Ramshackle games. Great fun to paint.

Thanks for looking and remember if the ground shakes head to hard ground. Take care out there.

Necrollusc

So we was scavenging in the old ruins and found these old hab blocks that looked pretty much untouched. We started to scope the blocks out, getting excited about our big find when Smash stepped in this trail of thick sticky slime. He couldn’t move his foot. It was horrible and we managed to get his boot out after a few minutes of swearing. The boot started to melt a couple of hours later. Real toxic sludge that was.

As I waited for Smash to put his boot back on and stop swearing we heard it. This horrible noise like man flu nose only much, much louder. There looking at us was this horrible giant mutant snail. A Necrollusc as the tribal legends call them. We thought they where scare stories but there was this great ugly thing looking at us. It’s eyes popping out on stalks, swivelling this way and that with a hungry look. Weird I tell you. It may be why no one has looted these blocks.

It raised up showing rows of teeth on its underside. What sort of critter has it’s mouth on its foot? Just too freaky. That was it, we legged it. Not too quick at first, I mean just how fast does a snail go? You can walk faster. Not the Necrollusc, this thing was gaining on with us. Panicked we ran quicker and were starting to out run it when two more moved in from side streets in front of us. I guess they must have been trying to catch us in a pincer movement. I thought snails was dumb? Running even faster we just managed to get through the trap.

We kept running and the Necrollusc’s chased us. Our chests felt like they where going to explode. We didn’t stop until we cleared the ruins and then some. I don’t know when they gave up, but I am glad they did. Smash still has bad dreams of those things chasing him.

The Necrolluscs are by Thunderchild Minatures as part of their Wasteman range.

Thanks for looking and keep a eye open for Necrolluscs.

The shadow people

Hello and welcome back Wanderer. I told you to keep an eye open for post 501!

Now for another wasteland hazard - the shadow people.

We found this old tunnel in the hills. Made of concrete like the buildings of old times. Excited we had found a lost bunker or vault we decided to explore. As we crept down this passage these things jumped us out of the darkness. Totally silent, quicker than a gassed up snake. In the panic Donny dropped the lantern and the whole place descended into darkness. You couldn’t see your hand front of your face. As we couldn’t see them we we couldn’t shoot. Not being able to shoot we legged it back towards the light.

As we emerged they followed us into the light. Ugly black skinned mutants with no eyes. The daylight didn’t slow them. That’s when we let rip, firing every shooter we had. It was hard to hit them as the moved like lightening. But then they paused looking about like they where confused before fleeing back to the hole they came from. That was the first time we came across the shadow people. I hope it was the last, we lost half the crew in that tunnel.

Found in dark underground places the shadow people are mutants who where once human. Blind, these mutants hunt for food using scent and echo location. The mutants are both feral and territorial. It is common for them to fight each other over food. When encountered your best bet is to stay still. If they start to attack try to make loud noises as this can effect the shadow people’s sonar. It confuses them forcing them to retreat. Gun shots work well. Even better if you can kill the thing while you are at it.

Here we see the shadow people jumping Masher of the Green Valley Hooligans. I think he has got this.

The Shadow people are GW Ur Ghuls from the Blackstone Fortress set - salvaged off eBay. I went for the an all black colour scheme inspired by the future beasts from the Primeval TV series.

Thanks for reading. Take care out there and keep a eye open for the shadow people.

Something HUGE comes this way!

Hello and Welcome back to my blog.

Umm....Something huge comes this way.

Everyone in the wastelands is familiar with Dungers, bad tempered foul smelling creatures who inhabit the wastelands. From around the campfires tall stores circulate about a giant Dunger living deep in the wild wastelands, the legendary Dungeron. The beast of myth and legend. No one has ever seen it but they still talk about it.

Stories also circulate about a giant white Dungeron roaming the remote wildlands. A beast that is said to be given a god like status by the primitive tribesmen who live near by. This is treated as a even wilder story as drunks try to out do each other with the campfire stories. But are they?

I plan to use the Dungerons in big game hunter like games or as a beast to terrorise the local camps. Although anyone encountering these beasts better be packing some heavy firepower as normal side arms will just make it even angrier. The Dungerons are by Ramshackle games and are very large models. That said they painted up a lot faster than I expected.

Thanks for looking, stay safe out there and beware the wild Dungeron.

Dungers!

Hello and welcome back.

After seeing a post about Ramshackle Game’s characterful Dungers on social media I thought I would get a picture of my own Dunger Herd as it stands.

There is a mix of older unavailable models and later ones by Ramshackle games in my herd. I am tempted to get more at some point as they are fun characterful models.

Got an adventurer that needs some luggage hauling across the wasteslands? There are pack Dungers too...

These are not the only dungers to be finished in my collection. There are a number of dungers with riders legs cast on them just waiting for me to decide what torsos to use. I have a massive Dungeron to paint too.

During last years BYOL Helsreach game I snapped this Dunger Stampede. These models are Curtis’s from Ramshackle games.

Thanks for looking and take care out there.

Umber Ulks

Hello and welcome back.

Umber Ulks live in old sewers and near toxic pools. They like dark damp places with high levels of contamination. It is assumed that they are a mutated Ambull but they are mutated from a small bug. Umber ulks lurk in the dark grabbing fresh food as it appears in their tunnels. They will pursue prey from their tunnels until they lose sight or start to dry out.

The Umber Ulk is a D&D Umber Hulk figure. They make a good cheaper substitute for the Ambull.

Thanks for looking, stay safe out there.

The beasts Busha Jungle.

Hello and welcome back.

Deep into the crumbling ruins of Once was city lies a oddly green zone of strange looking plants known to the locals as Busha Jungle. The biological weapons used on this part of the city during the wars killed the people but made the office plants, weeds and garden plants grow wildly out of control. The ruins are so over grown that they do not appear to be ruins with a casual glance. Stalkers, warbands, bandit, scavengers and salvage crews avoid the area with good reason. In the greenery something moves. Creatures step out and pursue intruders. Only fire weapons work on the shambling bush like creatures.

The plant men are said to be mutated humans or human corpses controlled by a malevolent intelligent form of plant life.

Plant men are from CP models.

Thanks for looking and stay safe out there.
