Radiation Bob's

Over on the Post Apocalyptic Wargames Forum the 2015 Warlord's Challenge is to make something to do with a Trader. It can be a vehicle, figure or terrain. As I am currently working on a set of Undercity Terrain I decided to make something in that vein. One of the nice things about the depths and caverns of a ancient city is the terrain also fits the Post Apoc wastelands genre nicely.

So weary wanderer come bring your salvage to Radiation Bob's for great trades!

Radiation Bob's started life as a plastic tub you get Christmas Puddings in. Once the delicious seasonal treat had been scoffed it was cleaned up. Staring at it for few minutes I decided that it looked like an ancient abandoned reactor or something similar.

A few minutes with a glue gun, knife and a pile of drinking straws and the basis of the Trader's station was formed.

The base is a cork pan coaster found cheap at Home and Bargains. The edges were broken off to give a broken rock look. The whole plot was then attacked with items from the depths of the bits box. A load of textured paint was applied. Once dried it was sprayed with matt black (what else?) car primer. Later a layer of grey car primer was used.

Some of the rubble and the rubble wall out front of Radiation Bob's are bits of the cork base.

The electrical power boxes are the  covers you  get on three pin plugs. The barrels, crates and milk urn are press cast milliput (I made Latex molds some years ago to stop my terrain obsession breaking the bank every time I needed some model accessories).

Rusty brown and orange make up most of the metal work paint. I decided that hand painted signs would be in order. Graffiti was also added most of which is inspired by certain Post Apoc films.

That's it....remember to come to Radiation Bob's for a great deal!!

Thanks for looking.

Rusty Robots.

Look out Wastelands....here come the Rusty Robots.

No. Not a heavy metal band but some post apocalyptic robots from Ramshackle Game's recent Kickstarter.

I plan to use the robots as wasteland dangers lurking in the ruins waiting for someone to trip their proximity fields upon which they power up and unleash mayhem. Other possibilities include use as objectives or as scrap metal body guards/henchmen of wasteland merchants or some sinister character.

The robots come in multiple resin pieces which allows you to construct them in whatever combination your crazed imagination can come up with.

The robots come with various heads which can allow you to mix them up like I have. Ramshackle will supply one type of head if you fancy something to unify your robot army of evil.

The resin pieces had little flash to clean up. A quick wash of the parts and it was onto assembly. Superglue does the trick. The robots where undercoated in black and painted silver. Then the top color was added to give the bots a worn look. Rust was added in places by using brown or orange paint. Then it was a couple of black and brown washes to tie the figures together. All that left was the details.

My favorite robot is the Dog-Bot

Another use for my Robots is to use them as a Warband. What does every Warband need? A leader. As if by fate a friend passed me the primed figure below a couple of weeks before the Robots landed (Cheers Tinker, I owe you yet another beer!).

It is my pleasure to introduce to you all Sergeant Hammerstein of the ABC Warriors!!

The figure (I think) is a Mongoose 2000AD Hammerstein. I have been a fan of the comic strip since I was knee high so I am pretty stoked to have this figure in my collection.

I did have to add a base made from an old gift card trimmed to size. Clean kitty litter was added as ballast. Hopefully ol' Hammerstein will be more stable when he sees action on the games table.

The Rusty Robots Warband.

Maybe I should add some 2000AD Renegade Robots to this clanking mob??

Thanks for looking.

Warboys Vehicles

So after seeing Mad Max Fury Road I had to build and update a few vehicles for the Warboys to rampage across the Wastelands.

First up....

This started life as a cheap pound store car. The blower engine was found in a hotwheels car - which tend to be redicously large. Its cheaper to do this than buying a resin engine.

The pound store car was stripped down and I wanted to add BIG wheels to the rear which I got from a Tonka Monster Truck car. A new base was made from balsa wood. It is easy to shape to the body. This allowed me to lower the front wheels to stop the car's front end from scraping along the ground.

The car bonnet had a hole cut to take the engine. The front wheels where found in the bits box. They are Ramshackle Nuclear Renaissance bits.  Bits of amour and braces where added from cereal packet cardboard. It needed a cupola. This was a M16 plastic backnut. A flame thrower was scratch built from bits of plastic tubing and junk from the bits box. The exhausts are also plastic tubing. They had to be extreme too.

I added some repair patches from green stuff putty. A bits box delve provided some bits to decorate it. One thing missing was the explosive lances the Warboys use. I scratch built them from bits of plastic tubing. A card circle makes up the detonation cap. These are not fixed so they can be removed for storage.

I tried to keep the paint work similar to the Warboys Interceptor from Fury Road.

Warbuggy.

I have had a mad puppets resin Orc buggy laying about for ages. Time  to get it painted.

This is pretty much how it was supplied. The kit has lots of odds and ends to post apoc it up. I added tubes to take the explosive lances and added a fuel hose in putty.

The weapons on this are spring loaded bolt launchers. They are ideal for damaging tyres and people alike. The downside is that they are slow to reload and are short ranged.

Dicey Car.

Many years ago I stumbled upon some 1:50 scale hotwheels cars. I converted this car. It was fitted with massive autocannons. They are not what I envisioned for post apoc. The autocannons are far too powerful. Digging about in the bits box I found some 40K Ork Rockets. So it was time to rearm.

The rockets are black powder powered with an explosive fit and there is only two. Once they are gone they are gone. The rockets are unpredictable and highly inaccurate. There is a good  chance that they will miss.

Thats all for now....thanks for looking.

Warboys!! Warboys!! WARBOYS!!!

Roaming the wastelands looking for slaves, loot and vehicles come  the Warboys! The Warboys are the army of a local Warlord.

The Warboys warband. The figures are mainly old OOP GW Gorkamorka Diggas. They fit right in don't they?

The Warboys. In this lot there are a few duplicates. I have added some scarves and goggles. One guy at the back has had his hand replaced with a Mantic Orx hand. The weapon has a brutal post apocalyptic look to it. The mob are equipped with shotguns or large caliber black powder revolvers.

A couple of Warboys gang leaders slightly better armed than the rest of the mob. The idea is to split the mob into two gangs when needed.

Warboy Shaman preaching the Warlord's litany of the promise of Valhalla and rebirth shiny and chrome.

Warboy Mob leader. This guy has a long range black powder musket.

Nux - the Warboys hero. This guy wears the clothes of a fierce road warrior he took down. He is armed with a pump action shotgun and big knife. The keen eyed among you will notice that this isn't a GW Gorkamorka figure. It is a GW Necromunda Delaque.

New Arrivals.

As a birthday present to myself I put an order into Amera Plastic Mouldings. I have been meaning to pick up some of their blown plastic terrain for some time. I need some extra Post Apoc Terrain.

The goodies box. Quick delivery and with some extra bits. Thanks Amera! Shall we go dig into the box?

A large blast crater.

Crumbly ruins.

Crashed helicopter gunship. This may make a good objective.

Bombed out ruins. I got one of these when Amera first started long long ago. I sold it on and regretted it ever since. Time for another.

Some old ruins from the fantasy line.

Ruined building from the fantasy line.

Extras. A floor, some blast craters and a scrap barricade.

I need to get these based ready for paint, flock and extra details from the bits box. I think the next couple of months will be focused on terrain.

Thanks for looking.

Wasteland Wondering

Welcome back to my blog. I have not been getting time so here is a update on where things are up to.

I managed to get a new ride. It's a 1990 Yamaha XV1100 Virago. Nice bike for its age. That has been taking some of my free time. This has lead to a rework of my yard, see real terrain making. I still have some patio work to do and a shed to build (my new toy needs some place to sleep).

My Cruisers.

For my recent birthday my wife got me some nice hobby goodies. A couple of 1/24 cars (that is 6 I have to post apoc now), an airbrush, some brushes, a basing kit and a couple of MDF buildings. Am I a lucky guy or what?

The new buildings.

I think I need to have a terrain month soon. I also got myself some terrain by Amera Plastic Mouldings to add more crumbly ruins to my table.

I picked up this month's Wargames Illustrated Post Apoc issue. It had a good history of the genre and lots of inspirational eye candy. It left me a little let down. The articles only covered two rule sets. There was no mention of the Post Apocalyptic Wargames Forum,  which existed before any of wargames forums even considered Post Apoc as proper genre. There was no mention of any of the excellent free ruleset out there such as Wastelands 3 or Skank.

The new Mad Max movie has left me hungry for a more PA car madness.  I am thinking of a desert setting similar to Mad Max and Tank Girl. The voices in my head keep telling me to go to 20mm for this lunacy. Arrrggghhhh.

I have managed to do some hobby work. The Warboys are nearly done. They need the detailing sorting. I also found a old Necromunda ganger to use as a character.

A couple of finished Warboys.

The car is nearly done. I changed the front wheels for resin Ramshackle ones and added the crazy exhausts. The flame thrower needed some scratch building work. It still needs a coupla gunner.

I painted up a resin buggy. The guns on this will be single shot dart throwers. I am trying to keep over powered weapons out of my Post Apoc.

In this vein I had to rework the Dicey Car. The twin autocannons it had made it too powerful. I am reworking it with a couple of Ork Rockets. These will be black powder powered and explosive. However there is only two and they are highly erratic to hit.

As  start on 1:24 here is the bodywork of the hotrod I am working on.

Now all I need to do is stop the urge to Post Apoc my new bike.

That is all for now. Thanks for looking.

Warboys wip.

After seeing Max Max Fury Road (a must see for post apoc fans) I decided that I needed my own Warboys war band. Now here is were I lucked out. Tinker kindly dropped me a box of old GW Gorkamorka Diggas (many thanks again mate!). Now my twisted little mind decided that they would do the job.

Here is a wip of the progress so far.

These guys are the test subjects. This pair only need the bases finishing and they are done. There is a few more to go. As I have repeated figures I am mixing them up by adding neck scarves and goggles.  You can't see too well but they have chrome paint on their faces.

The skin tones started off with a lupine grey. A brown wash was added just to get the shade. Then the highlights was added. This was Lupine Grey 50:50 mix with white. This was further worked up to white.

Then there is the vehicles. Here is a wip of the first one so far.

It needs exhausts, weapons and other gubbins. I need to find/convert a gunner next.

Now any ideas for a Immorta Joe?? Any one know of a figure that I can convert?
